About Young Writers

Young Writers runs national writing contests for schools, helping to turn students' imagination and creative talent into confidence and writing skills.

We support educators across the States by creating engaging creative writing contests, themes, outstanding resources and awarding incredible prizes to both schools and students. The fun and excitement of Young Writers' contests means together we can captivate and ignite the creativity of your students.

The result is confident writers! Your students will be proud of their creative writing ability and seeing their writing brought to life in a real, physical book that they can have in pride of place on their bookshelf.

Our Mission

Almost daily we're told that children and young adults who see their work published in a printed book have more confidence in their writing, are encouraged to write more, read more, and their literacy levels improve!

This experience has given my daughter real confidence in her writing. She had a huge sense of accomplishment in seeing her work in print and hasn't stopped writing poems since! She now aspires to be an author when she grows up.

Many of us at Young Writers were poets and storytellers from a young age. Some of us wrote poetry as a way to express our emotions and others found creative freedom in being able to convey our thoughts & imagination through writing.

It was this spirit that led Ian Walton, a poet rebelling against the elitism of the poetry world, to found Young Writers in 1991 in the UK. He vowed to make it possible for poets and writers of all ages to share their work across the world.

We want children and young adults to keep using their awesome gift for imagination and creativity! Here at Young Writers we will always be here to support, inspire and celebrate them!

How we do it

We've been working closely with educators, parents and their children since 1991 in the UK and since 2007 in the States. We've learnt what it takes to make the best writing experiences that will help young writers to build confidence and skills, and foster a life-long love of writing.

For us at Young Writers the goal is all about celebrating writing and personal achievement. Here's how:

1

Support fun and entertaining writing through quality resources

This is one of our favorite parts of being part of the wonderful world of Young Writers. We get to research and innovate creative ways to motivate and engage children of all ages to write. Our incredible designers take our weird, wonderful & wild ideas to create resources that have classrooms across the world bursting with creativity and imagination.

We're not just talking about black-and-white printouts, either (though there are some of those!). The resources are full of illustrations and images that bring themes to life, helping to guide young authors through the writing process to get their creativity flowing with ideas and writing prompts.

2

Inspire the creative process

Imagination and creativity are important skills and we think that children just don't get to use them enough! This can be especially true as they get older. By engaging in a contest, students get to train and flex these muscles, as well as enjoy letting their imaginations run free.

Guided by the contest themes and prompts that have been brought to life by our talented designers, students feel supported and encouraged with their writing. Every single child has the chance to enjoy writing, gain confidence and have a positive writing experience, including kids who may be reluctant writers, who struggle with spelling or who need extra support with their learning.

The result of Young Writers is helping kindergarten kids to write their first poem or inspiring elementary students to create a character then write about it to empowering young adults to write meaningful poetry or epic stories. We're always amazed at how varied and unique the work we receive can be for each contest’s theme - a true expression of individual imagination.

Celebrate writing skills

Much of the excitement of our contests comes from the creative process and students realising they can indeed write! We love sharing the achievements of our young writers and celebrating their creativity in our blogs and across our social media.

However, it wouldn't be a contest without prizes, would it?

One of the ways that we celebrate creativity is to award fantastic prizes to schools and students. Prizes vary from contest to contest. They include:

  • A special bookmark for every entrant
  • A certificate of talent to all young writers chosen for publication in a real book
  • Amazing creative writing goody bags or cash prizes for our favorite published writers
  • The Young Writers' Award of Excellence for the schools that submit the best set of entries
  • A free copy of the book for every participating school (and 1 free copy for every 30 entries)

You're all set!

So that's all about Young Writers! If you're feeling inspired to get your child or your students writing then check out our latest contests to find out more and download your amazing free writing resources today.
